Somalia’s President Removes Political Clause from Kampala Communique
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud spent three days asking six governments to keep troops in his country and find funding that was not available. He then told those same governments they had no business mentioning his domestic political crisis. His request was narrow and precise. He did not object to the security paragraphs, funding language or troop numbers. He objected only to a section about a conference on Somalia’s internal politics, pressing until it was removed. The exchange is visible in the summit livestream. Villa Somalia has not commented on the intervention. Its officials maintain that election arrangements are a Somali matter and belong in national mechanisms rather than foreign summits. Removing the section draws a clear boundary between seeking external security support and retaining Somali control over domestic political decisions.
