Somali President Rejects Opposition Call for Transitional Council
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud rejected an opposition call to establish a transitional council, warning his political rivals against weakening state institutions or using armed supporters to pursue political demands. He spoke on Saturday while opening the eighth session of Somalia’s federal parliament. Mohamud was responding to the Somali Future Council, which has called for a joint body to oversee the country’s disputed constitutional and electoral transition. He said Somalia had moved beyond the transitional era and would not dismantle institutions built since the federal government was formed in 2012. Addressing former national leaders now in the opposition, he said Somalia today was not the country in which they had served as transitional president or prime minister. The rejection sharpens the dispute over who should guide the constitutional and electoral transition, with the government defending existing institutions while the opposition seeks a joint council.
