AFRICOM Chief Rules Out US Base in Somaliland

Published:

The United States has no plans to establish a military base in Somaliland, General Dagvin Anderson, head of US Africa Command, said in an interview published Friday by the US Embassy in Mogadishu. The remarks came amid persistent speculation about growing American military engagement with the self-declared region. Asked whether repeated visits by AFRICOM officials were connected to plans for a permanent US military presence, Anderson said: “There are no plans to build a base in Somaliland.” Washington also reaffirmed its support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Rejecting a permanent base is consistent with Washington’s stated position on Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity as discussion continues over US engagement with Somaliland.
