UEFA Boycotts FIFA Competitions as Concacaf Rejects Plan
European nations agreed after an emergency meeting on Thursday to boycott all FIFA competitions, including the men’s and women’s World Cups. UEFA’s members unequivocally rejected FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s plan to sell stakes in the World Cup to a private equity group. Concacaf, North America’s football confederation, also rejected Infantino’s proposal, dealing the plan another major blow. The decision by UEFA’s 55 members means Germany, France, England and world champions Spain would not participate in the men’s or women’s World Cups while FIFA’s proposal remains active. “UEFA and its national associations will not participate in FIFA competitions,” UEFA said. A World Cup without Germany, France, England or Spain would lose much of the star power and emotional pull that Somali supporters across the diaspora attach to the tournament.
