UEFA Rejects FIFA Competitions Over Investment Plan
UEFA has said it and its national associations will not participate in FIFA competitions in response to Gianni Infantino’s plan to sell a stake in a subsidiary established to run FIFA tournaments, including the World Cup. FIFA is intended to control the subsidiary, but it will be partly funded by private investors. They include Joshua Kushner, the brother of US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law. It remains unclear how the situation will unfold. A senior European football source questioned what the decision means for the U20 Women’s World Cup, which begins in Poland on 5 September and features several European nations. The source said they were unsure whether the details had been considered when the overall policy was decided. A FIFA competition without participating European nations would give Somali football followers a markedly different tournament, while the dispute leaves immediate questions over how upcoming events can proceed.
