Uefa Members Vote for World Cup Boycott Over Fifa Plan
Europe’s 55 national football associations have voted to boycott World Cups if FIFA proceeds with a plan to sell stakes in its competitions to private investors. The decision was taken at an emergency meeting convened to discuss the proposal announced by FIFA earlier this week. Concacaf, which governs football in North and Central America, also said its 41 members had rejected the proposal made by FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Sources said the Concacaf nations were losing faith in Infantino. UEFA had already made its strong opposition clear through two sharply worded statements, and the vote has reaffirmed that stance. Somalia’s passionate football following is heavily invested in European leagues, and the World Cup stands as a rare global unifier. A boycott by Europe would remove the sport’s biggest names from the tournament, potentially cooling interest and future investment in football development across emerging nations like Somalia.
