Somalia Endorses Proposed Saudi-Led Military Alliance
Somalia has endorsed a Saudi-led initiative to establish a new military alliance, joining 13 other countries in welcoming the meeting’s outcome. The Saudi defence ministry convened chiefs of staff and senior military representatives from 43 of the 51 invited countries, along with a European Union delegation. Delegates discussed a founding charter, organisational structure, command-and-control arrangements and operational mechanisms for the proposed bloc. Riyadh intends to lead the alliance and host its headquarters in Saudi Arabia. That structure places Saudi strategic priorities at the centre of the proposed force. Somalia endorsed the outcome in a joint statement alongside countries including Djibouti, Egypt, Turkiye and Pakistan. According to analysis by The Somali Digest, joining this framework would place Mogadishu in a security bloc whose direction and command are closely tied to Riyadh, and the outlet argues Somalia must weigh cooperation against its freedom to set its own priorities.
