Reddit has launched a limited experiment using artificial intelligence to convert text posts into short videos and podcast-style audio clips. The feature is currently live on the web and will begin rolling out to iOS and Android applications this coming Tuesday. The platform is manually selecting existing posts to run through the AI conversion process. Rosa Kim, a spokesperson for the company, told The Verge that the initial phase will focus on a small number of specific posts before expanding to a wider selection of content as the test progresses. Kim explained that the trial aims to determine if the site's audience finds these alternative media formats useful. She noted the company wants to understand how to deliver AI-generated audio and video while maintaining a feeling that is authentic to the platform's established culture. The introduction of this tool follows recent remarks by CEO Steve Huffman, who suggested during an earnings call that the company was developing background listening features. Huffman highlighted a growing trend of third-party creators building entire video channels around AI voices reading Reddit threads, indicating that an official spoken version of the site could capture similar engagement. The move also aligns with a recent letter to shareholders, where the company outlined plans to build a modernised video experience. The document stated the goal was to reimagine how users and communities connect, share, and consume content across the network. Audio and video playback consumes significantly more bandwidth than reading standard text threads, meaning this feature could quickly drain prepaid data bundles for Somali users connecting from the region. Furthermore, since these automated voice tools typically train on major global languages first, posts in Somali-language communities are unlikely to receive the audio conversion treatment during these early experiments.
