Insta360 has announced the X6, the latest version of its 360-degree action camera. The new model is smaller than the X5 and X4 Air while adding a pair of larger custom Sony sensors and increasing 8K recording from 30fps to 50fps. The X6 is one inch shorter and four grams lighter than the X5, although it is slightly wider and thicker. Its two square 1/1.1-inch sensors provide 33 percent more sensor area and four times the light intake per frame compared with the X5’s 1/1.28-inch sensors, according to Insta360. Multiple AI chips, including two dedicated to imaging, help improve low-light performance and noise reduction. For 360-degree footage, the camera records at up to 8K/50fps. Its “Bullet Time” mode can reach 6K/120fps or 4K/240fps, while single-sensor 2D recording tops out at 5K/60fps or 4K/120fps. The rear touchscreen is smaller at 2.32 inches, but the X5’s LCD has been replaced with an OLED panel. Insta360 also claims the X6 is the first 360-degree camera with in-camera Dolby Vision support. The replaceable lenses are reportedly five times more scratch-resistant and 60 percent cheaper than before. A larger 2,600mAh battery provides around 140 minutes of recording at 8K/30fps, with Insta360 claiming up to 51 percent longer recording than the X5. The camera is waterproof to 66 feet, while its revised invisible dive case supports filming at depths of up to 60 metres without appearing in the footage. The upgraded InstaFrame feature can automatically create flat 4K videos while tracking people, pets or other subjects. A new feature called PanoMind uses an AI model trained on 10,000 hours of 360-degree footage to generate highlight reels while the camera is charging. Still images reach 120 megapixels in 360-degree mode or 42 megapixels when using one side. The X6 is available now in black or white, starting at $699.99—$150 more than the X5. An $799.99 Essentials Bundle adds an extra battery, an invisible selfie stick, a fast-charging case and other accessories. Somali creators considering the X6 will have to weigh its higher price against its gains in image quality, portability and battery life.
