Chainalysis has filed a lawsuit against the United States government after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) awarded a $94.6 million sole-source contract to TRM Labs, a rival blockchain analytics firm. The one-year award runs from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027, and covers forensic software and support services for Homeland Security Task Force investigations. Chainalysis challenged the award, describing ICE's decision as “arbitrary, capricious, and unreasonable.” The company said it had submitted a capability statement in response to ICE's notice of intent to obtain the forensic software and support services from TRM. The complaint remains under seal because it contains Chainalysis's confidential, proprietary information and trade secrets. On July 31, the court granted permission for the complaint to remain sealed. TRM Labs intervened in the case on July 28. Both companies provide blockchain analytics tools that government agencies use to trace cryptocurrency transactions and investigate crime. The court has scheduled responses from the government and TRM for Friday and oral argument for Sept. 2. The government has requested a decision by Sept. 10. Public filings do not detail Chainalysis's specific objections or requested remedy. U.S. government monitoring of cryptocurrency networks can affect the digital platforms sometimes used by the Somali diaspora for cross-border money transfers. As U.S. agencies make greater use of blockchain tracing, the anonymity once associated with international crypto transactions is steadily receding.
