Uganda Unveils Statue Honouring Netanyahu’s Brother
Uganda has unveiled a statue honouring Yonatan Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister’s brother and the only Israeli soldier killed in the Entebbe rescue operation. The mission rescued more than 100 hostages after two Palestinians and two Germans hijacked an Air France flight that had taken off from Tel Aviv and diverted it to Uganda’s international airport. Ugandan army chief Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba said the monument honoured Netanyahu’s courage and selfless service. He described the mission as “one of the most significant episodes in modern history” and called the two countries’ subsequent close ties a “remarkable journey”. The statue depicts Netanyahu striding forward with a machine gun in his hands. It stands outside the old airport terminal where the rescue took place. Three hostages—Jean-Jacques Mimouni, Pasco Cohen and Ida Borochovitch—also died during the operation. Dora Bloch was later murdered at a hospital in Kampala, where she was receiving treatment. For Somalis passing through Entebbe, the monument ties the airport to a regional episode marked by hijacking, rescue and loss of life.
