South Korea Records Its Hottest Day
Yangsan in southeastern South Korea reached 42.5°C (108.5F) on Sunday, marking the country’s hottest day on record. The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) said the temperature was recorded at 1:26 p.m. local time (04:26 GMT). It was the fifth consecutive day that temperatures in Yangsan exceeded 40°C. Heat warnings remained in effect across much of South Korea, while temperatures climbed into the upper 30s in many cities. More than 20 localities were under emergency heatwave alerts on Sunday. Introduced this year in response to increasingly severe summer temperatures, the alert is issued when forecasts predict a perceived temperature of at least 38°C or an actual temperature of 39°C or higher for one day. For Somalia, the new record makes early-warning systems and practical plans for periods of dangerous heat increasingly relevant.
