Musical Spirograph is a web-based tool that combines the geometric drawing patterns of a classic childhood toy with mathematical music generation. Running entirely within a standard browser tab, the program allows users to build dynamic audio sequences by manipulating mathematical formulas without installing dedicated audio software. The application models the behavior of a physical Spirograph, using mathematical equations to send points moving across the screen in curves known as hypotrochoids and epitrochoids. As these points travel along their trajectories, they intersect a series of concentric rings. Each intersection triggers a specific musical note, producing audio sequences that directly correspond to the visual shapes being drawn. Users can adjust both the visual designs and the sound output. The interface provides six virtual rotors that change the curve formulas, and supports up to three drawing arms operating at the same time. Additional parameters allow further customization of the geometric patterns on the screen. On the audio side, the program includes six musical scale options alongside full customization of individual notes assigned to the rings. It features six synthesizer presets, adjustments for tempo (BPM) and quantization, and the option to expand the concentric rings across two octaves. Despite its creative flexibility, the program has notable technical constraints. The built-in audio engine can produce clipping and digital artifacts during complex visual activity, and the tool currently lacks MIDI output to control external synthesizers or external digital audio software. Lightweight browser tools like Musical Spirograph offer an accessible entry point into algorithmic sound design across Somalia and the wider region. Because the application runs in standard web browsers without paid software licenses or high-end studio hardware, Somali students and tech enthusiasts in cities such as Mogadishu and Hargeisa can experiment with mathematical audio generation using everyday laptops and smartphones.
