Puntland Monitors Federal Military Movements Around Galkayo

Published:

Galkayo lies on the boundary between Puntland and Galmudug, with separate administrations and police forces in its northern and southern sections. A green line familiar to residents divides the city. Its history of clan conflict and hard-won local agreements means armed movements there cause particular alarm. On July 25, Puntland said it was monitoring federal military manoeuvres around Galkayo. It accused Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s government of using military and political pressure to weaken Puntland’s institutions. Garowe viewed the buildup as an attempt to influence Puntland because Galkayo controls the land route between Mogadishu and northeastern Somalia. Galkayo’s location makes any confrontation there larger than a local dispute: military activity around the city can affect both Puntland’s relationship with the federal government and movement along the southern road.
