Galmudug Direct Polls Conclude Peacefully
Polling stations in Somalia’s central Galmudug state closed on Thursday after more than 200,000 registered voters were given the opportunity to choose regional lawmakers and local councillors in a landmark direct election held under tight security. Voting took place at nearly 300 polling stations across 11 districts. Election officials said the process ended peacefully and largely on schedule, although some stations remained open beyond the official closing time to allow voters already waiting in queues to cast their ballots. “The election generally took place smoothly, and the polling stations closed at the scheduled time,” said Abdikarim Ahmed Hassan, chairman of the National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission. Direct voting gives Galmudug residents a more immediate role in choosing the representatives who serve them at regional and local levels.
