HAWK Withdrawn After Mythos Uncovers Cryptographic Weakness

HAWK, a digital signature scheme designed to withstand future attacks from quantum computers, has been withdrawn from consideration after the Mythos AI security model found a weakness. The algorithm had survived two rounds of testing by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which was evaluating the security of post-quantum cryptographic algorithms. Its third testing round was intended to catch precisely the kind of flaw Mythos helped uncover. Anthropic announced the findings on Monday, and HAWK’s developer said Tuesday that he was withdrawing the algorithm. Mythos also separately found a weakness in the mathematical problems underpinning the widely used AES cipher.
