Barcelona Agree £65m Deal For Manchester City Midfielder Rodri
Barcelona have reached an agreement to sign Manchester City midfielder Rodri for a fee of £65 million. The 30-year-old, who won the Ballon d'Or in 2024, is set to sign a four-year contract with the Spanish champions, with the transfer expected to be completed in the coming days. The agreement comes after Manchester City rejected Barcelona's opening offer of £38.5 million last week. Rodri was entering the final year of his contract at the Etihad Stadium, prompting City to make a decision on his future. Real Madrid had looked like his next destination, but Barcelona stepped up their efforts in recent days to secure the signing. Rodri leaves Manchester City after seven trophy-laden seasons in which he made 298 appearances. He joined from Atletico Madrid in 2019 for a then club-record fee of £62.8 million. He missed much of the 2024-25 campaign because of a serious knee injury, and parts of last season were disrupted by a hamstring problem. He returned to his best at the summer World Cup, leading Spain to their second title and being named player of the tournament. Speaking after City's defeat by Arsenal in the Community Shield on Sunday, new boss Enzo Maresca said: "Rodri is a player who just won the World Cup and Ballon d'Or. He's a top player, all the teams need a Rodri, so it's not about if we miss Rodri or not." With Rodri departing and Bernardo Silva also having left, City are actively searching for midfield reinforcements. Eighteen-year-old Moroccan midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi has been discussed throughout the summer, with the club reportedly holding talks over an estimated £85 million move. Bouaddi made a name for himself with a starring role in Lille's Champions League victory over Real Madrid in 2024 and impressed at this summer's World Cup. With 30 Ligue 1 appearances last season, he operates as a deep-lying conductor similar to Rodri and would complement summer signing Anderson, who is more of a box-to-box midfielder. Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez is another target, although City did not submit a bid before Chelsea's Friday 17:00 BST deadline. Chelsea want £120 million for the Argentine, and Xabi Alonso's side now hope to keep their vice-captain after no bids were thought to have been received. City are understood to believe the matter is not over and that Chelsea still want to do a deal. Maresca knows Fernandez well: he made him Chelsea captain when Reece James was injured and played him in 79 of his 92 games in charge at Stamford Bridge. Although naturally a defensive midfielder, Fernandez was pushed further forward many times last season when Cole Palmer was injured, resulting in a career-best 15 goals. That versatility means Fernandez and Anderson could play together. City have also explored a move for England international Scott. The 22-year-old Bournemouth midfielder has rejected contract offers amid interest from other Premier League clubs, with his current deal running until 2028. Bournemouth rejected a £64 million bid from Chelsea last month and made clear that further approaches would not be welcomed; approaches from Arsenal were also rejected. Scott's energy, ball-carrying and duel-winning ability suit Maresca's possession-heavy style. Liverpool's Mac Allister is another option. The Argentine is into the final two years of his contract at Anfield and has been a consistent presence in the Reds' midfield, though he struggled for form during a difficult 2025-26 season. As a Premier League winner, Mac Allister would bring top-flight experience and be a ready-made candidate to slot into City's midfield. Rodri's departure reshapes the balance of power in the Premier League and La Liga, two European competitions followed widely in Somalia. Fans in Mogadishu, Hargeisa and the Somali diaspora will watch a significantly reshaped Manchester City midfield, changing the tactical identity that has dominated English football for seven years.
